Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions, Answered

Our Frequently Asked Questions section is designed to provide clear, concise answers to the most common inquiries from potential and current investors.

We want to own businesses that we truly understand and can value with confidence. The companies we seek are often visionaries in their fields—leaders with durable cash flows, strong balance sheets, and proven management teams who act in the best interests of shareholders. Above all, we look for inflection points in their key performance indicators, moments that signal a shift toward even stronger fundamentals.

We run a concentrated portfolio, generally between 10 and 25 holdings. This allows our best ideas to truly matter in driving returns, while still offering the diversification needed to manage risk.

We combine rigorous fundamental research with a proprietary use of AI as an analytical amplifier. Instead of automating decisions, our framework enhances how we detect hidden risks, uncover overlooked opportunities, and sharpen conviction in our investments. This approach is strengthened by our founder’s rare background: not only years of professional investing experience, but also direct work training advanced AI models like ChatGPT to improve at fundamental analysis. That combination of market expertise and technological depth gives us a research edge that is difficult to replicate, helping us both find value and protect capital.

Our view of intrinsic value is not static—we continuously monitor each company and adjust our estimates as fundamentals evolve. We typically reduce positions as prices approach intrinsic value and exit when prices exceed it. We may also sell if our updated assessment shows that the discount has disappeared, or if a position grows beyond our risk parameters.

David Angeles

Founder of Laguna Capital

Graduate of Cornell University’s MBA program, where he earned the McAllister Award and placed second in the 2022 International Cornell Stock Pitch Competition.

He also achieved third place in the Alpha Challenge—the most prestigious stock pitch competition in the United States—with both of his pitches delivering a 73% return one year later. During his MBA, David served as a TMT Equity Analyst for the Cayuga Fund, part of Cornell University’s endowment.

David’s professional experience spans equity research, trading, and derivatives. He spent over four years as a multi-asset trader at Compass Group Asset Management (now Compass Vinci), one of Latin America’s largest investment managers. He began his career at Monex Group as an exotic derivatives analyst and later joined Fairway Partners in Boston as an Equity Research Analyst, first during his MBA summer internship and subsequently after graduation.

Most recently, David collaborated with OpenAI, training ChatGPT specifically in fundamental analysis and contributing to the development of its Deep Research function. This intersection of advanced AI capabilities with traditional fundamental analysis became the foundation for Laguna Capital’s research-edge investment strategy.

Michael Wonho

Co-Founder of Laguna Capital

Michael Wonho is the Co-Founder of Laguna Capital and a graduate of Cornell University’s MBA program. He has extensive experience in corporate finance, risk management, and investment analysis, having held key roles including Balance Sheet and Foreign Exchange Hedging for Merck/MSD—managing exposure across more than 100 countries and currencies—as well as analyst to the Chief Financial Officer at the University of Pennsylvania SOM, a $10 billion-revenue institution, and analyst to the Chief Financial Officer at American Heritage Financial Institution, managing over $5 billion in assets.

While at Cornell, Michael served as a Healthcare Equity Analyst for the Cayuga Fund, part of the university’s $10 billion endowment. His stock pick generated a 167% return in six months, demonstrating his ability to identify high-conviction opportunities through rigorous fundamental analysis.

Most recently, Michael has collaborated with OpenAI on Deep Research initiatives, agentic operator testing, and model validation for financial applications. This blend of corporate finance expertise, investment acumen, and AI-driven research experience shapes his role in building Laguna Capital’s competitive edge.
